What is it?

Family Class immigration program supports the ability for Canadian citizens and permanent residents to bring relatives to Canada.

The program can be regarded as a two-step process:

1. Sponsorship application​
2. Permanent Residence application

Upon successful completion of this two-step process, the family member is granted permanent resident status.

Since it is a two-step process, if you want to sponsor a family member, you need to qualify as a sponsor, and your sponsored person also needs to qualify as a family member.​

How do I qualify?

As a Sponsor: You need to meet the following requirements in order to be eligible to sponsor a close family member:

• Be 18 years of age or older
• Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
• File an application to sponsor a member of the family class or the spouse or common-law partner in Canada class.
• Reside in Canada or intend to reside in Canada when the application is approved
• Not receiving any government aid except for disability
• Provide enough proof for good financial means (if required).
• Not be subject to any bars to sponsorship.
• Sign an Undertaking and a Sponsorship Agreement.

As a Family Member: You can be considered a family member if you are:

• A spouse, common-law partner or conjugal partner who is 18 years of age or older.
• A parent
• A grandparent
• A dependent child, including a child adopted overseas
• An orphan child under 18 to be adopted in Canada and you are a sibling, niece, nephew or a grandchild to your sponsor.
• A child under 18 who will be adopted in Canada
• Any other relative of any age or relationship if none of the above relatives could be sponsored and your sponsor has no other relatives who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents or registered as Indians.​
